In 1910, a devastating fire that burned three million acres and killed 85 people in Washington, Montana, and Idaho prompted the construction of over 5,000 high rise fire tower lookouts across the U.S., 600 of which were built by President Roosevelt’s Civilian Conservation Corps (the CCC) in the 1930s.

America's fire towers for rent are among the country's best bargains: around $40 per night, for the kind of alpine panoramas and solitude usually associated with an Austrian chalet. The view from Big Creek Baldy in Kootenai National Forest, in northwest Montana is breathtaking.
The tower can serve as your basecamp for cross-country skiing or snowshoeing in the winter, or hiking amid the wildflowers in the summer months. Built in the 1940s by the Civilian Conservation Corps, this fire tower was constructed with granite sourced from the area. The view: From one side, you’ll get a cityscape view looking out over Denver.
Many towers are summer only. But on the southern slope of Mt. Hood is Clear Lake Cabin Lookout, which welcomes powderhounds who are okay with the 4-mile snowshoe trail in. There’s a pulley system to carry firewood. Near Government Camp, OR.
